Do you have experience with ecosystem restoration projects? Are you looking to apply your skills to working deeply in a sustainability focused, international not-for-profit organisation that is seeking to foster social and environmental change?  

Preferred by Nature is a non-profit organisation that works for sustainable land use and climate-friendly solutions. With 270+ staff around the world, our services and projects help organisations with their sustainability efforts, build capacity, raise awareness, conserve nature, and support social wellbeing.

We are currently seeking a team member for Ecosystem Restoration Specialist position. The position will be part of our Ecosystem Restoration Programme and will have primary focus on supporting the mainstream of sustainability. 

More specifically, your responsibilities will include:

  • Engage with Ecosystem Restoration stakeholders and organisations.
  • Active involvement in identifying potential clients for ecosystem restoration services, including individual clients or those that are already part of restoration funding projects. 
  • Development of supporting materials such as handbooks, instruction guides, etc., to perform verifications.
  • Provide support to create and maintain the programme documents such as website contents and templates.
  • Task Management and field auditing against the Ecosystem Restoration Standard (including contact client, programming, create engagement, coordinate logistics, implementation and completion of on-site work, reporting).
  • Support the design and implementation of a restoration training programme.
  • Provide training and information, as needed, for Preferred by Nature staff and/or external individuals.
  • Work in collaboration with functional areas across Preferred by Nature to ensure strong stakeholder engagement, consistent communication, requirements captured accurately, and outputs delivered as planned.
  • Participate in projects and in developing new project concepts.

Professional requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree required, Master´s degree preferred, in forestry, agriculture, environmental sciences, or similar fields.
  • At least 4 years’ experience with a similar position.
  • Knowledge and experience in restoration (reforestation, natural regeneration, agroforestry, mangrove, rewilding, etc.), preferably including landscape perspective. Experience different ecosystems (forests, wetlands, savannas, streams, etc.) is valued.
  • Experience in land-use sustainability auditing schemes, preferably in different countries/contexts/languages.
  • Demonstrated understanding of complex contemporary social and environmental challenges.
  • Stakeholder management and ability to influence and engage with the wider restoration community.
  • Ability to adapt and adhere to established processes and quality controls.
  • Forest carbon accounting valued.
  • GIS experience valued.
  • Fluent (oral and written) in Spanish and English (English level B2 Upper-Intermediate) is a must. Knowledge of additional languages is an advantage.
  • Developed analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to adapt and adhere to established processes and quality controls.
  • Continuous service improvement mindset.

  • You have interest and ability to travel. This can be up to approximately 40% of working time.
  • You are self-driven and highly motivated and can work on your initiative and drive things forward by yourself and together in a team.
  • You have a high level of self-discipline, and you can organise and manage your time and tasks independently.
  • You are comfortable frequently communicating with colleagues around the world via various technical platforms.
  • You are a constructive team player with an open attitude and a good ability to work with people from many different cultures and backgrounds. The current team is multicultural and from various regions globally.
  • You believe in Preferred by Nature’s vision and mission and want to contribute to fulfilling it.

Position details

  • Work time: full time position.
  • The position reports to our Land-Use Programme Manager, based in Spain.
  • Working location: Preference will be given to candidates located in countries where Preferred by Nature has offices.  Considering the location of other core team members and time zone differences, we are preferably looking for a person located in Peru or Mexico.
  • Salary commensurate with qualifications and experience. Expectations on salary level, which may be impacted by the location of the applicant, will be a consideration for this position as well.
  • Expected starting date: as soon as possible.
