Job Summary 
This nine-month, tenure-track position requires teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in Geographic Information and Spatial Data Science (GIS/SDS) as an Assistant Professor of Geography within the Geography and Geology Program in the School of Biological, Environmental and Earth Sciences. Development of a research program leading to refereed publication and external funding as well as participation in program, school, university and community activities are required.

Candidates with a broad range of sub-fields and applications areas are welcome to apply, including those with research interests in Big Data, Machine Learning as well as Spatial-Temporal and/or Realtime Spatial Data Analysis.  The preferred candidate would be able to match program strengths in Coastal Science, Earth Systems Science, and/or Human-Environment Interactions.  Applicants are expected to show strong skills in undergraduate and graduate instruction in Introductory and Advanced Spatial Analysis and Analytics, Remote Sensing as well as Spatial Data Visualization.  The candidate hired to fill this position will be responsible for teaching introductory, advanced and graduate level courses in the GIS/SDS.
  
Applicants are expected to engage in innovative scholarship in GIS/SDS and their field of sub-specialization and to be committed to securing extramural funding for collaborative and interdisciplinary research. Applicants will also be expected to enhance departmental ties with regional research opportunities such as the Stennis Space Center (NASA, NOAA, DOD/Navy) and the US Army Corps of Engineers as well as USM’s own research centers through collaboration in a wide range of geospatial technological initiatives.
  
 USM offers a BS and MS degree in Geography as well as a GIS Certificate Program at both the undergraduate and graduate level.  The Geography and Geology Program is part of the School of School of Biological, Environmental and Earth Sciences, which also includes programs in Biology (Ecology & Organismal as well as Molecular) and Medical Lab Science. 

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  1.  Teaches undergraduate and graduate students in a variety of courses in Geography including Geographic Information Science (GIS).  Teaching includes preparation of course materials such as syllabi, course content, homework assignments, and handouts; evaluation and grading of students’ class work, assignments, and papers; maintaining student attendance records, grades, and other required records; and holding regularly scheduled office hours in order to assist students.
  2.  Provides academic advisement and faculty mentorship to undergraduate and graduate students.
  3. Pursues research and scholarly activity designed to result in peer-reviewed publications, professional presentations, and external funding.
  4.  Participates in service at a variety of levels, including program, school, college, university and community service.
  5. Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications 
Doctorate (Ph.D. or equivalent) at the time of appointment in Geography or a related field with research and teaching specialization in Geographic Information Science (GIS). ABD applicants will be considered as long as doctorate is conferred by time of appointment. Demonstrated line of scholarly inquiry evidenced by submission of peer-reviewed publications, professional presentations, and/or grant submissions and awards. Ability to provide proof of COVID-19 vaccination or to have an approved legal exemption and/or accommodation on file with Human Resources prior to your anticipated start date.
 
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Specialized knowledge in the field of Geographic Information Science (GIS) as demonstrated by graduate level coursework or professional experience is required.
  •  Knowledge and proficiency in industry standard GIS and geospatial software.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively on interdisciplinary teams.
Preferred Qualifications
Preferred qualifications include, but are not limited to, postdoctoral experience, evidence of exceptional scientific accomplishments such as publication of high impact research in internationally recognized journals. Successful grant applications or other evidence of ability to secure extramural funds. Prior experience teaching at the collegiate level.
