Description

Position Description: Endowed Director of Texas Native Seeds.  Directs program at the Caesar Kleberg Wildlife Research Institute at Texas A&M University-Kingsville to promote restoration with native plants in Texas through seed source development, research, and outreach.  Administer a state-wide program of 10–15 staff.   Engage donors and secure program and projects with extramural funding.  Seeking natural resource professional with a strong presence and research and management experience who is passionate about native plant restoration. 



Closing
: 31 October 2021 or until a qualified candidate is identified. Preferred start date is 15 January 2022 but this is negotiable.



Responsibilities:

1) Establishes the direction, goals, agendas, and implementation strategies of the Texas Native Seeds (TNS) Program and plans, organizes, and proposes research initiatives to meet project mission at regional, state, and national levels.

2) Provides guidance, direction, and oversight of seed development program and restoration methodology research program.  Oversees release, licensing, and commercialization of native seed sources.

3) Researches, develops, and pursues funding opportunities with private, state, and federal grantors to enhance TNS then formulates TNS Program budget and oversees all expenditures and accounting of multiple financial account spending.

4) Supervises, directs, and evaluates performance of TNS Program staff

5) Prepares, reviews, and publishes scientific, technical, and non-technical publications regarding the project, including newsletters, annual report content, website content, scientific journal articles, and popular press articles (magazines and newspaper).  Prepares and gives presentations to the scientific community and the public.

6) Manages and maintains collaborative relationships with diverse groups including private landowners, state and agency personnel and academic researchers necessary to meet project mission and oversees all project communications with donors and the general public. Manages and maintains strong TNS project Advisory Group and Technical Committees.

7) Represents TNS, CKWRI, and TAMUK on various state and national committees and advisory groups. Coordinates TNS program events, field days, and outreach activities.  Travels to and evaluates project research sites, and collaborative projects across the state.



Requirements

Minimum Qualifications:

1) B.S. in range science, ecology, or related field from an accredited university.

2) Ten years of related experience in program management including related supervisory experience.

3) Knowledge of flora of Texas, applied and scientific experience with habitat restoration practices, native seed production, seed product development and commercialization of native seed sources.

4) Knowledge of research, statistical, and evaluation methodologies for the development of native seed sources and evaluation of native plant restoration techniques.

5) Strong leadership skills, ability to lead and direct an interdisciplinary team of researchers, collaborators and private sector employees.


Preference will be given to applicants with:

1) Graduate degree in wildlife science, ecology, or related field from an accredited university.

2) Demonstrated ability in fundraising through collaboration with a diverse group including private landowners, state and governmental agency personnel, and academic researchers.

3) Demonstrated ability to promote habitat restoration and support land stewards in restoration efforts.

4) Proven publication record in peer-reviewed publications, technical outlets and non-technical outlets related to restoration and native plant conservation.



Location:
Texas A&M University-Kingsville (TAMUK) is located in Kingsville, a city of approximately 25,000 in southern coastal Texas. Kingsville is surrounded by the historic King Ranch and is about 40 miles south of Corpus Christi (population: 300,000) and within 50 miles of Baffin Bay and the Gulf of Mexico. TAMUK serves about 9,000 students.
